SUMMARY:18th-Century Sweden: The Golden Age of Gustavian Style
DESCRIPTION:In 1771\, the future Gustav III returned to his native Sweden from the French court at Versailles to ascend the throne as king after his father’s sudden death. The young monarch had been profoundly inspired by French Neoclassical architecture and decorative arts. Later trips to France and Italy gave further impetus to Gustav’s passion for the classical. During his reign (1772-1792)\, Sweden rose to a level of architectural and cultural sophistication never known before. The king transformed this once removed European country into the “Paris of the North\,” setting a standard of style for most levels of Swedish society that continued well into the 19th century.  \n\n\n\n\nDownload Highlights\n\n\n\nRegistration Form

SUMMARY:Classicism in Denmark: Great Houses\, Castles\, Gardens & Urban Spaces
DESCRIPTION:One of the dramatic aspects of experiencing the city of Copenhagen are the towers\, belfries and steeples around the city. The architecture of Copenhagen is characterized by a wide variety of styles\, progressing through Christian IV’s early 17th century landmarks and elegant mansions and palaces of Frederiksstaden\, to the Renaissance\, Baroque\, Rococo and late 19th century residential boroughs and cultural institutions to the 20th modernistic and 21st century new developments. Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. Copenhagen\, its capital\, is home to royal palaces and colorful Nyhavn harbor\, plus the Tivoli amusement park and the iconic “Little Mermaid” statue. On the Island of Funen/Fyn\, is the town of Odense which was writer Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown\, with a medieval core of cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. \n\n\n\n\nDownload Highlights\n\n\n\nRegistration Form

SUMMARY:Newport\, Rhode Island: Houses\, Mansions and Gardens from Colonial Days to Gilded Age\, and to Today
DESCRIPTION:Newport was founded in 1639 on Rhode Island\, which is now called Aquidneck Island. No American seaside resort is more famous or historic than Newport. In part\, that’s because few other places retain so superlative and intact a legacy of extraordinary buildings dating from the early colonial period to the modern day. In the eighteenth century\, Newport’s harbor was the most important port in the country\, especially in the American Revolution\, making Newport a very prosperous town. In the mid-nineteenth century summer cottages started to appear and the Gilded Age kicked off around 1865 and ran up to 1915 and World War I. Preservation of historic Newport started in 1945 with the purchase of Hunter House (c.1748) in the Point Section of town – and this led to the formation of the Preservation Society of Newport County (now popularly called Newport Mansions). Newport Preservation Foundation and other groups followed. All major architects and firms are represented in Newport starting with Peter Harrison in the mid-1700’s\, then to Richard Upjohn\, Richard Morris Hunt\, McKim Mead & White\, Horace Trumbauer\, Peabody & Stearns\, John Russell Pope\, Delano & Aldrich\, Charles Platt\, to name a few. Today\, firms like Fairfax & Sammons\, Peter Pennoyer Architects and others are all engaged in projects. \n\n\n\n\nDownload Highlights\n\n\n\nRegistration Form
